We are following up 16 funds that only target Belgian stocks. None is as good as that of Ghent fund manager Value Square.
We are fans of Belgian stocks. If you our stock selector If you consult, you will notice that we buy no less than twenty Belgian listed shares. No country does better. Our stock analysts therefore know their home market like the back of their hands and find many stocks valued cheaply at the moment. And among the funds that follow Belgian stocks, the topper is Value Square Equity Belgium.
The only reason why we are not a buyer of a widely diversified fund in our stock market is because the item “Belgian stocks” currently does not deserve a place in our model portfolios. If we take into account future potential, risk and diversification benefits within a portfolio, other investments are more suitable.
That does not alter the fact that there are good funds that only aim for the shares that are listed on the Brussels stock exchange. And the primus inter pares among the offerings is the Value Square fund. Over five years, the fund has an average return of 5.3% per annum. That's double the average of the other funds (2.8%) and even four times that of the tracker Lyxor Bell 20 UCITS ETF (1.3%). Other strengths include lower-than-average price fluctuations and consistency in performance. Only when it comes to costs, the fund is among the middle class. All of this results in a great report with a score of '100'.
The fund uses a value strategy and mainly targets companies that are listed below their intrinsic value. Subsequently, investments are made in the stock for a long time (an average of about five years). For example, the top five of the fund are occupied by AB InBev, X-FAB Silicon Foundries, KBC, EVS Broadcast Equipment and Van de Velde. Together, they account for almost a third of the portfolio. What is remarkable about the portfolio is that the fund does not follow the BEL 20 index, but dares to cover the entire Belgian stock spectrum.
As mentioned above, the investing category is not part of our portfolio strategy. However, if you want to invest in Belgian stocks through a diversified fund, the well-managed Value Square Equity Belgium is the product to buy.
